H&M's Fabulous Home Decor

H&M recently hired UXUS to create innovative installations to launch the Home COllection debut at their headquarters in Stockholm. The goal was to create fashion forward galleries that displayed the home products in a a contemporary way that upheld the values of their clothing design.

I am a huge fan of H&M, and I was excited to see the displays that were generated to celebrate the launch of this new product line. I believe that the home designs are a fashion forward reflection of the H&M apparel lines. Additionally, the installation displays were a great way to gain publicity for the new product line.

It is interesting to see the emerging trends that are generated in home design. It seems that a lot of apparel companies are expanding their merchandise mix to include home decor. The fashion forward collection of furniture, textiles and home goods are a great addition to H&M. I am excited to shop these designs when they hit retail locations!!

DIY and "Ground up" Trends

The recession has created a new influence on fashion. Many trend savvy young women are creating their own "looks" from the ground up. These ladies are using DIY techniques, vintage shopping, and thrifting (and re-making) in order to create some pretty amazing ensembles. Some incredible DIY trends are emerging based on street style. A few DIY trends to not include: Ripped tees and jeans, colorful bib necklaces, and studded and "bedazzled" shoes.

Trend Report: Gothic Princess

At the Ball, I took a few pictures (of the most trend savvy and fashion forward) ensembels that I saw. This is the start of a HUGE semester project that will consist of identifying trends throughout Germany.
I am loving the way that she put this look together. Her hair, dress, and accessories all coincide with the theme of Gothic Princess. she did a fantastic job styling this outfit, and I am loving all of the intricate details. Everything goes- even her hair and ruby red lips!!

My husband did a fantastic job at organizing his Batallion's St. Barbara's Ball this past week. The ambiance of the ball encompassed the dungeon of an Old German Castle, equipped with candles and medieval themed decor. We had a great time (even though Nick was super busy :) )

Coca-Cola Walks the Runway in Milan

Donatella Versace, Alberta Ferretti, Anna Molinari from Blumarine, Veronica Etro, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Marni's Consuelo Castiglioni and Angela Missoni were the designers chosen to design coca-cola bottles for Milan Fashion Week. The bottle designs were part of a Fashion charity project for the Abruzzo Region, a project organized by Coca-Cola Italia in conjunction with the Municipality of Milan.

How amazing are these designs!! What could be better than my fave beverage dressed in some of my favorite designers ensembles!!!

The resent Prada shoes in Milan, were made of dazzling crystals dangling from kicky Lucite heeled sandals.

In conjunction, crystals were sewn all over the trends that walked the runway. Could this possibly foreshadow better economic times ahead? This is a MAJOR turning point in today's fashion- from recession chic- to extraordinarily frivolous.

This past weekend, my husband I ventured to Stuttgartt. We had a fabulous time filled with dinners in contemporary restauramts, my bamberg teams's swim meet, and a "fest" that was said to closely resemble Oktoberfest. What a cute city!!

I went with comfortable clothing for sightseeing and walking around. Leggings and tights are always a great choice for fall (and of course ballet flats!).

I met friends out for a few cocktails (at the very last minute), so I threw this outfit together in a hurry. I REALLY wanted to wear this cream dress one more time before packing it away for winter. I broke the #1 fashion rule of ladies in the South (NEVER wear white after labor day!). However, I consider "cream" to be a little more lenient. I paired my cream dress with black to make the outfit more transitional and "fall appropriate". Can you believe I had to wear tights AND a wool jacket in September?!?!?!

Calling all Farmers- Overalls are back!

Earlier today, Ralph Lauren brought back an old denim classic for the debut of the Spring 2010 collection at New York Fashion Week- the overall. The romper and jumpsuit foreshadowed this trend, but I could not believe that it would appear on the runway so quickly.

Lauren's insight on the collection:"I am inspired by the character of the worker, the farmer, the cowboy, the pioneer women of the prairies living authentically through challenging times,""I have always admired the honesty of their work wear-the weathered jean, the sturdy overall, the jean jacket, the faded blue work shirt, the naive print of a floral dress."

I have mixed feelings about the re-emergence of this trend. I have some very fond memories of my numerous pairs of overalls from GAP Kids and Limited Too (circa mid nineties). However, I do not foresee this particular piece of clothing making its way into my closet or daily style any time soon. I am however, excited to follow the street style of this fad. I imagine there will be some very creative outfits remixing overalls.

The super comfy, casual denim has re-appeared! Will you jump on the bandwagon?

My husband had a big "give away" pile of old clothes, and as I was cleaning, I couldn't help but notice all of the "frat-tastic" pastel button-up oxfords that he was eliminating from shirt collection. Still in the process of decorating our new flat, I thought it would be a fabulous idea to turn some of these shirts into throw pillows for the guest bedroom (the "Lilly Pulitzer" theme of the room is all pastels). I sketched up a brief idea of what I want to do...now I just need to execute (when I can find the time). DIY! Final pictures to come!

Perhaps, one of the biggest innovations in Tween fashion is the "celebrity craze". More than ever, tweens are turning to celebrities for fashion inspirations. A number of celebs have launched individual lines that appeal to their fan demographic. Some of the most popular apparel lines for teen girls include: Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, The Jonas Brothers, and Miley Cyrus. I love that these wholesome celebrity role models are able to influence the way that tweens dress (and provide their styles at affordable prices).

Chanel's recent (and much anticipated) launch of Chanel Jade (407) nail polish, has fashionista's buzzing everywhere. It seems that this glorious shade of Green has been featured all over the place, and more specifically on the Chanel Ready-to-wear autumn/ winter 2009-2010 runway show. This item has become notorious as one of the most coveted nail colors for fall. This newly acquired trend of "boldly colored nails" will be interesting to follow over the next few seasons. The darker hues (such as plum purples, blacks and browns) seem to be phasing out. Newer, bolder, and more vibrant hues are now taking center stage.

Side Note: When I was about 11, I went to visit my Aunt Jennifer out in California. As a special "treat" she took my cousin and I to get a manicure at the Ritz Carlton. Oddly enough, this shade of "jade" was the color I chose for my first manicure! What goes around comes around!

I had a big day at work today (complete with a visit from my boss), so I had to look professional, yet still be comfortable enough to be on my feet all day. I found this cropped yellow jacket at Marhall's when I was home last month ($12!). I paired the little number with a basic black tee, high waisted skirt, and pashmina scarf (to accomodate the chilly morning). Thanks to my hubby for taking pictures outside our apartment door!

Fashion Week Faves: Marc Jacobs

I am infatuated with Marc Jacobs collection for Spring/ Summer 2010. The palate of shell pinks, grays and blues provide a basis for gorgeous ensembles, and frilly flirty silhouettes. I am especially intrigued by the eclectic mix of silhouettes including tailored trousers, ruffles, and pleats. Additionally the selection of trims is incredibly unique. A variety of sequins, lace, and diamond-like cutouts make each individual piece of this collection unique.

One of my "goals" (among other things), is to start a chain of boutiques along the east coast. My partner in crime? My lovely, fashionable mother. This semester, I am taking a number of classes that are going to help make this dream possible. By the end of the semester I will have a complete business plan, as well as all of the necessary legal documents needed to start our business!

A Case of the Mondays

Today was definitely a case of the Monday's. After a full weekend of traveling (and less than 7 hours of combined sleep), I had a hard time getting up at the crack of dawn to work, and spend numerous hours at a cafe writing a massive paper. To top off this lovely monday, it was 40 degrees and raining in Bamberg. I opted for comfy leggings, a warm wrap, and a little bling (to make myself feel a little better about dressing like a scrub). At least monday is over. Check!

I LOVE these shoes. After seeing Kirstin Dunst in a pari about 5 years ago, I was on a continuous search. I actually found these online at Target for $7! They are converse, and sooo comfy!

VMA FASHION: Sequins, Leather, and Lace

There were some absolutely smashing outfits work last night at the VMA's. The common trend among young women seemed to be sequins, leather and lace. I am loving the short skirts, corsets, and killer garment trends. This year, a very "edgy vibe" was executed on the red carpet. Below are a few of my favorite ensembles:

I am a HUGE Lauren Conrad fan. However, I am not such a fan of her look tonight. The DVF dress is a classic, however, it does not seem appropriate for the VMA's. I was expecting something a little more "sparkly" on Lauren. This outfit would be perfect for a brunch or daytime event. I think she could have done a little more with her extensive wardrobe choices.

Meet the New Ann

Ann Taylor always holds a place in my heart for the classics (as a spent hours upon hours working in the store my senior year of college). I know the product well, and therefor am willing to spend more money than expected for clothing of which I have such a sentimental attachment.

I am especially loving the "New Ann Taylor". Ann Taylor recently acquired designer, Lisa Axelso, who has brought Ann Taylor designs to a whole new level. Originally geared towards the "baby-boom" business woman, Ann Taylor has taken on a whole new approach to fashion.

Ann Taylor has put together a new look. Style Director Kristin Rawson told StyleList. "We're stylizing our current customer and are looking to attract new customers" (stylist.com). I am so excited to see the evolution of Ann Taylor. I obviously started working at Ann to gain "professional wardrobe essentials" for my first job out of college. Now, I consider Ann Taylor a retail store for almost everything: boots, pumps, cocktail dresses, evening separates, etc. Check out the New Ann!!!

Inspirational Style Icon: Grace Coddington

Lately, I have been obsessed with the poise and work of Grace Coddington. At 62, she is still a HUGE fashion muse, and style icon. I am particularly intrigued by her ability to style some pretty incredible outfits. She is different from most stylists, as she plays off of the theme of the photo shoot, and her "vision" of fashion, rather than specific trends that are currently in style (although these are often incorporated into her ensembles).

Grace Coddington is an amazing woman. She is truly inspiring as she has taken her career to new levels (even in her 60's). A former British Model (London in the 1960's), Coddington is most notoriously known as the creative director for Vogue, and the worlds best-known fashion stylist.

I cannot wait to see the "September Issue" ( a documentary that was just released about Anna Wintour of Vogue). The documentary is said to give insight into the relationship between Wintour and Coddington, as well as imminent details as to what the women do on a daily basis, and how they collaborate and coordinate the production of Vogue. This is definitely at the top of my Netflix Que!

Fall was in the air today. I decided to celebrate the changing of seasons with various shades of brown and rust. I purchased this dress a few years ago at Banana Republic. I grew tired of the embelishments on the front (not shown), so I did a little DIY work to wear the dress backwards (and of course cover the back with a cardigan). I am disappointed in the quality of pictures. I am in desperate need of a new camera.

My biggest Vice: An Addiction to fashion blogs. I seriously browse 100's of fashion blogs on a daily bases (and it probably takes up way to much "fun time"), but I love the inspirations and stylistic insight that I gain from others street style. I love this look. Who would have thought black tights paired with frilly pastels would look so amazing. I am truly inspired by Brooke's ability to pull together a killer outfit. She definitely has the ability to step out of a stylistic "comfort zone".

Note to self: Do not be afraid to REALLY go after some outrageous ensembles!

Get Excited for New York Fashion Week!

I am so excited for the start of Mercedes Benz fashion week (starting tomorrow, September 10). While I cannot physically be in New York, I am anxious as to what will be in store for Spring 2010. I am curious as to whether the economy will continue to play a role in styles and trends. Will minimalism be a key concept in Spring designs? Trend: Are Jeggings a "Do" ???

"Jeggings" (aka jeans that take on the shape and silhouette of leggings) are the new "it" fad for Fall 2009. Just when we thought that skinny jeans could not get any skinnier- jeans become leggings. Although this look as exhibited much controversy and criticism, I have to say that I am a fan. "Jeggings" have been around in Europe since last fall, so I may have grown accustomed to seeing this trend on the streets. I love the "Jeggings" look with high-heels (especially the dark wash). It seems that Jeggings can be a "Do", as long as they are work correctly. When worn with a tunic length top, covering the bulk of ones thighs, jeggings can actually be appealing on the average person. While this trend will likely come to a close in the near future, I am enjoying it while it lasts!

Shop the Looks at Style.com!!!

Style.com (the online home of Vogue) has finally enabled the viewer to obtain looks straight off the catwalk!

Style.com has launched a new e-commerce initiative "shop the looks" that will allow viewers to shop trends that are currently on the runway. Users will be able to use runway look books for inspirations that are currently available on the retail floor. Each runway slide will be tagged with specific categories of looks that the viewer can shop. Additionally, the "shop the looks" section of style,com will provide 7 categories (clothing, bags, shoes, jewelry, beauty, accessories, sale), in which the viewer can browse items that are currently available in stores.

Style.com prides itself off of being one of the main places for consumers to gain insight into what they would like to purchase (fashion wise). Now, users can immediately shop the looks similar to what is on the runway.

I am SO excited about this new feature. I often love looking to style.com, and vogue for fashion inspiration. Now, these designs and merchandise availability will be available at our fingertips!

One of the biggest runway trends for fall 2009 collections, include inspirations gathered from the 1940's era. Sleek shoulder pads and tailored silhouettes make these collections a close replica to the original basis for their inspiration. I always enjoy seeing an emerging trend that has been prevalent in the past. It makes the fashion circle of life complete. History ill always repeat itself in the fashion industry. Anthropologie recently launched a new line of jewelry at their "sweet shop". I am loving this innovative way to present fall bracelets, the "arm candy" collection. It is ALL ABOUT the layering this season. From necklaces, to bracelets and rings. The more eclectic the better. I am personally taking advantage of layering as much jewelry as I can. Germany has seen some of its last days of summer. Even though it is barely September, the days are becoming shorter, and the fall chill is in the air.
I had a few meetings today, so I wanted to be sure that I looked appropriate without sacrificing comfort (since I would be on my feet all day). This picture is not very clear, but I chose a black dress with a full industrial zipper up the front, a lightweight cardigan, belt and black wedges. It has been depressing to put away all of my vibrant summer colors. Back to embracing the palate of blacks, browns and grays in Europe...

Over the knee boots were all over the catwalks for Fall 2009. The height of the boots allowed for less substantial clothing, and styles ranged from from stocking-like to trouser-like in appearance. This fall and winter, over the knee boots will be available everywhere on the retail floor. I am loving this look of classic sophistication. This new fad will work great with numerous ensembles: skirts and tights, over jeans and trousers, and paired with short "winter" shorts and stockings. These are definitely on my fall wish list!

How to wear Over the Knee Boots: These boots are absolutely fabulous (if worn correctly). Make sure to wear boots in a way that extends the length of the leg (without visual breaks). Match boots to tights or stockings, or skinny pants that compliment the color of the boots.

The "recession" fad last fall brought back the basics. We began to see lots of classics re-emerge in an effort to become more "practical" as a collective society. The classic white button down was one of the most popular pieces. It was versatile, classic, and timeless. This year, we are seeing a continued trend with this wardrobe staple. The difference? There is a new spin on classic white. Embellishments, of the shoulder necklines, masculine silhouettes, and tunic length pieces are all the rage for 2009.
